It was an incredible spectacle at Asafo in Kumasi as thousands turned out to mourn Kwaku Adusei Kanawu at his one-week memorial yesterday, (Thursday, 15th August 2013)

Hearts Managing Director, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe led a team of Hearts Management, current and former NCC officials and supporters including Hearts Ladies to the highly emotional ceremony at the forecourt of the deceased's family home. Notable among the Hearts delegation were Nana Ntiri-Kodua Asabere, Maxwell Asabere, club PRO Saeed Muheeb, Ali Phobia, Maxwell Koranteng, Atto Quagraine, Lawrence Ofosu-Agyare, Vincentia Deku and Baba Ashai.

Former Board member and one of the most successful Chapter 9 chairmen of all times, Alhaji I.A. Issaka as well as Alhaji Iddrisu "Pokifans", Hearts patron also joined the team to pay tribute to the late Kanawu.

There was an equal measure of tears and cheers as several of Kanawu's impressive adventures were recounted and recordings of his memorable banters and witticisms were replayed.

It was recounted that in the 80's when information flow was limited, Kanawu would travel to Accra at his own expense to watch Hearts' training and pick information about the team from club officials and, on his return to Kumasi, become the most precious commodity among Hearts fans. Mounted on a table or chair at the Asem Park with hundreds of Hearts fans gathered around him, he would titillate their ears with the latest camp "fill" - from the juiciest to the most unpleasant. He was literally "Mr. say- it-as- it- is" and it is this forthright nature that earned with the accolade Kanawu.

It was little wonder then that Kanawu's departure has generated so much emotion. The outpouring of grief yesterday cut across the partisan Hearts-Kotoko, NDC-NPP, religious and ethnic divisions. Kotoko sent a delegation led by Management member Jerry Asare and their fans were also there in their numbers.

The Chief of Asafo himself was moved to stir from his palace to the memorial grounds to console the bereaved family. Deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yamin, Osei Kwame Despite of Peace/Hello FM fame, broadcasting celebrities Afiewura Kwame Djokoto and Kwabena Yeboah and a host of radio station staff were in attendance. Representatives from New Edubiase, Medeama FC and other Premier League clubs were not left out.

The Hearts delegation arrived at Kumasi in the early hours of Thursday morning and ahead of the programme, pitching camp at the Roman Hill "headquarters" of the Kumasi Hearts Ladies club, popularly known as Chapter Half. By 11 am, other Hearts fans had come to swell the number to over a hundred, on foot, they streamed to down towards the Labour Office Roundabout and up the Hill to the late Kanawu's family house at Asafo where a thick crowd of mourners had already gathered.

Around 2 Pm when the place was choked with mourners and one thought more than enough had turned up, hundreds of Hearts fans who had gathered at Asem, came budging in with the "arose" "arose" song drowning every other sound at the venue. It was an incredible experience.

On the sidelines, Hearts' Managing Director Neil Armstrong was stealing the show in his own manner as he became the subject of intense interest from the Hearts fans who showered him with cheers, hugs, handshakes and requests for photographs. A traditional praise singer put the icing on the cake when he crooned a few poetic lines in praise of the M.D, who showed appreciation by slipping a crisp GHC10 note into the old man's palm.

It was a memorable one-week that has set the funeral planning committee wondering what spacious enough venue can be secured to accommodate the tens of thousands expected at the real funeral on the 7th of September.

Fare thee well, Kanawu.
